The belief that females should, at the time of belief, be given more power than they currently have. This is regardless of the current male state of power, whether it be at its lowest or highest. Also, both men and women can be feminists.

Note: Feminism is NOT the belief that women and men should be equal, that is known as egalitarianism.
John: Why is Mary a feminist?
Max: she thinks women are better than men.
John: Isn't that sexism?
Max: By her logic, only men can be sexist.
John: so feminism is hating men?
Max: not usually, at least as long as women really are opressed.

The belief in the political, social, and logistic superiority of women to men. Female followers, especially zealots, are known to embark on quests to recruit white knights in the most insidious and covert ways she can imagine. The belief that manual labour and the dirty, dangerous jobs are for men, whom they describe as disposable and inferior.
Feminist: #KillAllMen! Women are the wave of the future! All men are scum and should be disposed for women's benefit and women's only!
Female Detractor: Wow. Feminists sure do hate men. Not my kind of faith at all.
Feminist: Traitor! Feminism is about equality for the genders!
Male Detractor: But you just claimed, seconds ago, that women were superior to men.
Feminist: HELP!! POLICE! HE'S RAPING ME!!!

The feminist movement was something that occurred really throughout the 20th century. Starting in 1920 when wen gained the right to vote and again in the 1980's when women really started to break away from their traditional roles in western society.

These days feminism is being rejected by many young women. This is because these days young girls feel they have just as much opportunity to make a living as men.

Now days the connotation of feminism has changed from the original denotation of the word. Now feminism has a new common meaning "believing women deserve special treatment" while this is NOT the actual dictionary definition of the word, it is what most people mean when they talk about feminism these days.

Consequently, many young women feel the need for change has past and with it the need to identify as a feminist.

The young women who still identify with feminism are on the more "radical" side of the scale and feel women are still not equal and want even more benefits given on top if the affirmative action already provided for being a women in western society (more scholarship opportunities, more access to government assisted living, and government subsidies for owning their own business). These are the radical women who have given feminism a bad name.
Example of the new connotation of a feminism:

"Goddamn did you hear that bitch talking about how employers should have to pay for their female employees' birth control and pregnancy tests?!"

"Yea man! That chick's gotta be a feminist."

people who are seeking /equal rights/ regardless of gender and sex, commonly mistaken for a 'women are better' ideal by those who are lesser educated about feminism.
Man 1: I'd happily punch a feminist in the face because they believe in feminism.

Man 2: I'm a feminist.

Feminism is a movement started by old faggot hags on their period.
Feminists strive for dominance, not equality.
"DID YOU JUST LOOK AT ME?!"
"Uh..Yeah...So?"
"YOU'RE A RAPIST! I'M CALLING THE POLICE!"
Feminism in a nutshell.

A left-wing movement in Western culture originating in the 1960's that seeks socio-economic equality between men and women.

Proponents of the movements cite years of hardship by women when they could not access the same basic privileges as men (e.g. such as the right to vote). They argue that even though throughout history most human societies have been patriarchal, rapid advances in the past hundred years have made it necessary to rethink the status of women in relation to men. They cite that the extremes of living in a patriarchal society such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and discrimination against women as their primary reasons for supporting feminism.

Opponents of the movement argue that feminism has gone too far and has accomplished most of its original goals. They argue that if it proceeds any further, there is a real danger that feminism will go on to elevate the status of women and result in a generation of emasculated men. They add that feminism has hurt gender roles and made the typical family structure unstable and caused an increase in divorces, breakups, abortions, etc.. With a surplus of women working, they argue that this has resulted in them them being away from their spouse and children and them spending less time at home.
The symbolic poster of feminism reads:

We Can Do It! *showing off bulging bicep*
