Also known as a dorm rat. A student that for whatever reason, wants no part of the greek system. They oftentimes sit alone in their dorms on weekends wondering whats going on in the outside world. They have a distinct unfounded hostility toward Greeks, but never hesitate to leach off of them, such as drinking their beer, or attending parties, from which they always end up going home alone. Many of them get all of their information on Greek life from TV and movies, they never bother to do any actual research. According to them, Greeks are "losers who have to pay for their friends." It never occured to them that one of their favorite celebrities is very likely a greek. It never occured to them that a "frat boy" could someday turn out to be, say, some of the greatest athletes/coaches of all time(Michael Jordan, Shaq, Karl Malone, Wilt Chamberlain, Orel Hershiser, Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Emmit Smith, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, Mike Ditka, Tiger Woods, Jesse Owen, Troy Aikman, Lou Gehrig, just to name a few), some of the most famous actors/entertainers(Elvis Presley, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, James Caan, Burt Reynolds, Bob Hope, Brad Pitt, Matt Groening, Steven Spielberg, Warren Beaty, Tom Selleck, Ron Jeremy, Paul Newman, Merv Griffin, Danny Thomas, James Dean, Harrison Ford, John Wayne, just to name a few), (Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Jesse Jackon, Nelson Mandela, 85% of US Supreme Court Justices, 76% of the Nations senators, all but two US presidents since 1825), a famous astronaut(everybody on the Apollo 11 crew), a famous business owner(43 of the 50 largest corporations in the nation are headed by "frat boys"), or even their mommy and daddy's boss. According to studies, only about half of GDI's end up graduating college, as opposed to 71% of Greeks.
That kid went GDI after getting blackballed by 2 fraternities.

God Damn Independent, a college student that is not in a fraternity/sorority.
What frat are you in? Frat!?!?! Fuck that, I'm GDI!

God-Damn Independent: term used by college students to refer to a non-Greek student. In a derogatory sense, it is used to refer only to those who choose to bash the Greek system. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for Greeks and GDIs to be friends.
Despite the party's location on Greek Row, many of the people who showed up were GDIs.

1. "God Damn Independent" - A derogatory term used by members of Greek organizations to describe someone who has sufficient intelligence and social skills to simply make friends, not pay for them.
"Look at that GDI, he'll go somewhere in life, unlike the legions of coked out worthless douchebags who were misled into thinking that joining a fucking frat was a smart decision."

Acronym for "God Damn Independent," often used in a derogatory way to refer to a college student who chooses not to join any sorority or fraternity.

Seems to be used in a derogatory way the most by people affiliated with the 'Greek' system because they do not realize that 'independent' really isn't even an insult. Typical brainless, follow-the-crowd, frat people. Damn, frats and sororities are like cults. People go in fine and come out brainwashed, dumb, and/or slutty. IF they ever come out.
Vic: What's your title?

Sam: What?

Vic: You know, what frat are you in?

Sam: Oh, I'm a GDI.

Vic: Wow, I really think you should go Greek.

Sam: You know, they're not even really Greek. They just jacked the Greek letters and twisted them to use in their half-assed, drunk-partying organizations. I only rushed for the free food. You'd have to pay me to join one.

Vic: Why don't you join?

Sam: Um, it costs money I can't afford to waste, I can make friends on my own time, I don't really want to be saddled with people I don't like, I don't like to do pointless shit, and I don't like how they always call each other 'big' and 'little.' It's hella annoying. Oh, and I don't really like to conform.

Vic: What's 'conform?'

Sam: *sigh*

(God Damn Independent). A college student who is not an active or a pledge to a particular sorority or fraternity. The GDI has either chosen to not affiliate with the greeks or maybe rushed and did not pledge. GDI's tend to have a reputation of being dorm rats but some GDIs are cool and have some greek friends. Just depends on the particular GDI. Being titled a GDI should not judge who someone is, its just a decision.
What sorority are you?
Oh im not, im a GDI.

Non-greek, non-person that can be spotted rocking WWE teeshirts, gel-crusted hair, cargo shorts, tennis shoes, longboards, and snapbacks. Is an initialism for god damn independent but should never be capitalized because they are not worth holding the shift key for. Can often be heard bashing the greek system after embarrassingly being denied entry into a house party on multiple occasions for which it was not given the address but followed the tracker on its girlfriend's phone. On the rare occasion that a gdi is allowed entry, it will almost certainly die of alcohol poisoning and give the chapter a bad name.
Today a gdi asked me why I'd want to pay for my friends. I told him he couldn't afford to understand. TFM
